Small Business Goals for 2019

I’m a planner, so naturally I love a new year. It gives us a natural restart, a reason to look back on our last year and pivot based on what we’ve learned. 2018 was a year of firsts for me and I did learn a lot. I learned that I wanted to focus on graphic design, that I love working with small business owners, and that I have to learn how to manage my anxiety during my workday.

With those lessons in mind, I’ve made a little list of what I want to be this year.

Be a person who encourages.

You know what’s exhausting? Constantly comparing myself to other artists, social media mavens, or small business owners.  My journey is so different from others and the only way to be proud of the progress I’ve made is to own that journey. So I’m making a mindset shift. When I feel jealous, encourage. When I feel frustrated, encourage. When I feel small, encourage. You’ll see this shift in my social feed because this is such a key area of comparison for me. I hope you’re encouraged by my changing feed too!

Be open and share what I know.

Something I’ve come across that I’m really not into is this style of marketing where the educator dangles a free offer only to switch it out for a paid offer at the last minute. I get people need to make money, but for some reason this feels really dishonest to me. So when it comes to information sharing, I’ve decided that I’m just gonna share what I know. A rising tide lifts all boats, right? So if you have questions, ask away!

Be honest with myself.

Boundaries are important. I have some serious anxiety and depression and they can get out of hand pretty quickly if I’m not careful. I have to stop and take a mental check a little more often than I’d like, but the alternative is to fall into unhealthy coping patterns that stop me from working and inhibit my ability to get back up again. Selfcare is important and it shouldn’t look like a Netflix binge in the middle of the day.

This year will not be perfect, I know that. But I also know that I have an amazing opportunity to grow into the person I want to be, even if it’s just a little change at a time.

If any of these goals resonate with you, I’d really love to hear from you!
